What is WordPress Plugins ?

A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress.

Where can i find plugins?

There are two ways of finding wordpress plugins:

Go to the plugins page by clicking on the “plugins” menu item to the left

Plugin Menu Item

Once you have landed on the Plugins page you need to click on “Add New”

Add New Plugin

in the search block in the righthand top corner type the name of the plugin that you would like to use. I know that you do not always know what the name is of the plugin that you need, But fortunately for us you can use keywords. So lets say that we would like to get a security plugin that will protect your wordpress site against hacking or spam, Type in the word “security” and look at the results

Security Plugin

Once you have seen a plugin where the rating and downloads are high and you feel that you would like to try the plugin, click on “More Details” to see the Screen Shots, Installation instructions, and reveiws. In my case i have selected “BulletProof Security”, I know this plugin well and have had great success working with it in the past.
Click on “Install Now”, Once the installation process is done the button will change to “Activate”, Click to activate.

Now you need to setup teh plugin so that it works on your site and allows users or yourself to use its functions. This is where the “Read More” or “Installation instructions” normally comes in handy, Always read the instructions and follow them to the word. UIf you do not follow them your Plugin will not work properly.

There are thousends of plugins, some of them are freeware, and others needs to be paid for. This is all up to you, Remember the plugin paid for will have more functionality and support than any free plugin.
